I think that a new section of the SAT that would ask analytical questions would be better. This is how the GRE is done, and it works very well. There is already an English section on the test. If colleges are interested in the writing of an applicant they should ask for a writing sample and review it themselves (as many already do). Standardized tests such as the SAT and GRE ask in depth questions about English comprehension and vocabulary but only the most basic math questions (no trigonometry or calculus). Those in fields such as science and engineering are put at a disadvantage by this. An analytical section is challenging and does not require any field-specific knowledge - ideal for the SAT.
